Children as Fans of the Planet
Educational website for children in Mexico to learn about Mexican ecosystems and the environment and how they can help preserve it.
What is Fans del Planeta?
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources in Mexico commissioned this project with the goal to promote learning regarding the Mexican ecosystems and the environment and its preservation among children 8 to 12 years old.
My role as a Product Manager and UX Designer started in 2009 and continued until 2012. It included several responsibilities including strategy, concept & content development, UX design, game design, and user testing. Members of our target audience had an input every step of the way and were highly engaged in our final round of user testing. The project was awarded internationally with the Prix Jeunesse Iberoamericano and the prestigious Japan Prize.
Goals and Objectives
To promote learning regarding the Mexican ecosystems and the environment and its preservation among children.
Objectives:
To create a connection between the environment and children’s daily lives.
To guide children's learning about new ways to relate to the environment.
To help children understand the impact that their actions have in the environment, being it urban or natural.
To support the school curriculum and activities related to environmental education.
Constraints
Tons of information, dozen pages was too much for tweens to absorb.
Funding was subject to political changes.
The product was not part of the national education curriculum, thus we needed to figure out how to drive kids to the site and to keep them engaged. The client and my team agreed that we wanted children to be active participants and we needed to figure out how to make that happen.
